Multimedia retrieval: Are we doing it right?

Posted by ViSenze 21-October-2015

In a keynote speech that took place at the ACM International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval (ICMR 2015) in Shanghai earlier on this year, one of our co-founders, Professor Chua Tat-Seng, shared his thoughts on using multimedia retrieval to tackle real-life problems.

The ICMR is an annual conference that illuminates state-of-the-art technologies in multimedia (text, image, video and audio) retrieval. It acts as a great opportunity for researchers and practitioners to exchange leading-edge multimedia retrieval ideas.

The technology and methods that allow for effective and efficient information retrieval based on user needs has been one of the most exciting areas in multimedia research.

During the session, Prof. Chua discussed issues in using visual analysis for real-world problem solving, suggested directions to move forward as a research community, and outlined approaches to make the community more inclusive.

Prof-ChuaJust recently, Prof. Chua has also been awarded the prestigious ACM Special Interest Group on Multimedia (SIGMM) award for Outstanding Technical Contributions to Multimedia Computing, Communications and Application. It was given in recognition of his pioneering contributions to multimedia, text and social media processing.

The two main issues that he highlighted at the event includes:

  • The necessity to make fuller use of content information including text and audio, and various kinds of contextual information (such as the user's mobile device settings, social postings, check-in history etc.) on top of visual analysis to handle real world problems.

  • Big multimedia application ideas hardly come from the multimedia research communities. For example, many recent innovative applications in video such as contextual advertising, live situational sensing, wearable health devices, and many more, have all come from the commercial world.
