ViSenze Chief Scientist Wins Prestigious ACM SIGMM Award

For immediate release, 30 October 2015

The prestigious ACM Special Interest Group on Multimedia (SIGMM) award for Outstanding Technical Contributions to Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications is given in recognition of Prof. Chua Tat-Seng’s pioneering contributions to multimedia, text and social media processing at the 2015 ACM Multimedia Conference hosted in Brisbane from 26 - 60 October 2015.

The award is presented annually to a researcher who has made significant and lasting contributions - through both research and practice - to multimedia computing, communication and applications. It recognizes members of the community for long-term technical accomplishments or those who have made a notable impact through a significant technical innovation.

Prof. Chua is no stranger to the world of research in multimedia, text and social media analysis and retrieval, having made substantial contributions in these fields since the early 1990s.

His wealth of experience and strong interest in multimedia information retrieval and social media analysis led him to co-found ViSenze, a leading machine intelligence company that offers visual search and image recognition solutions through extensive R&D based on solving real-world problems.

Prof. Chua played a paramount role in the setting up of the company, especially in the early stages - from crafting out the technical roadmaps and strategies to applying insights and knowledge gained from the academic world. He was also deeply involved in other facets of the organization, such as partaking in collaborations with various partners and building the initial team at ViSenze.

His long term expertise in the areas of effective large-scale information analysis, organization and retrieval has led ViSenze through many key milestones, including closing its US$3.5 million Series A round of funding, and bringing top e-commerce players in Asia such as Flipkart and Zalora on board as customers.

"I am deeply honored to be conferred this award for my achievements in multimedia, text and social media processing. This is the best recognition of my achievements from the research community and I hope my work has helped inspired many researchers to start work in this exciting field," said Prof. Chua Tat-Seng, Chief Scientist and Co-Founder of ViSenze.

Prof Chua is currently the KITHCT Chair Professor at the School of Computing, National University of Singapore, and the Director of a multi-million-dollar joint Center (named NExT) between NUS and Tsinghua University in China to develop technologies for live media search.

On top of that, Prof. Chua is also active in the international research community, having published papers in top conferences and journals. In addition, he has organized and served as program committee member of numerous international conferences in the areas of computer graphics, multimedia and text processing.
